Lina Bird
A native of Masontown, West Virginia,
Lina is a fourth-year biology/environmental science student
at Duquesne University in Pittsburgh. She has been involved
in biology research since her freshman year, including
maize genetics and arsenic-eating bacteria, as well as
abandoned mine drainage issues near her home.
Her 2005 internship at the farm is the continuation of
a long interest in sustainable agriculture - she has participated
in her family's experiments in gardening and sustainable
living, and hopes to apply the knowledge gained working
at the farm to her own family's homestead. |

Sue Brandell
2005 marks Sue's second year working
at the farm, a relationship that began when she crossed
paths with Jodi and Evan when they were vendors at a farmers'
market in 2003.
In 2005, Sue began her thirty-fourth year of teaching
secondary math. When she's not teaching, Sue is working
toward certification as a yoga instructor by the end of
2005 and has enrolled in horticulture and flower-arranging
courses at Phipps Conservatory in Pittsburgh.
Her continuing interest in working at the farm stems from
a combination of her affinity for organic flower and vegetable
production, the thrill of being part of a fledgling business
that she believes has great potential and the joy of working
outdoors. |

Tom Davenport
A native of Plano, Texas, Tom is a
junior attending Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh,
where he majors in Ethics, History, and Public Policy.
In recent years, nature has become his main source of
inspiration, and his 2005 internship with the farm represents
his first serious effort to explore his interest in ecology.
He feels that the farm is a worthy model for how food
production could transition from a commoditized, impersonal
industry to a wellness-centered process fueled by the
good intentions of those who labor to cultivate the land.
His desire is to use the experience he gains this summer
to enter the field of agricultural policy, where he hopes
to advocate for more sustainable practices. |

Luke Rust
Returning to work at the farm for his
second year in 2005, Luke is a secondary education major
at Duquesne University in Pittsburgh. He graduated from
Duquesne in May 2005 with a Bachelor of Science degree
in Biology, and is now working on his Master's of Education.
Luke grew up on a 200-acre farm in western Pennsylvania,
where he continues to live with his parents and younger
sister. His family raises beef cattle, hay, field corn,
sweet corn, pumpkins, and many kinds of vegetables. Although
Luke likes many things about living in Pittsburgh, working
for Cherry Valley Community Farm is a great escape from
the city life because he is a country boy at heart. |
